The Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) has completed the US$1.5m improvements to the Metropolitan Airport, within budget and ahead of schedule. The hub is part of the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) general aviation system.
Improvements to the Metropolitan Airport included resurfacing and extending Taxiway A, installing LED lighting and repainting runway markers.
Taxiway A was extended to 4,004ft (1,220m) to match the overall length of the runway. Funding for the improvements were part of the US$16m in federal and state grants awarded to the IAA in 2017.
Mario Rodriguez, executive director at the IAA, said, “General aviation airports like Metro are crucial to the overall transportation landscape. They provide flexibility for flight and function that can’t always be accommodated via commercial flight.
“Investing in improvements to our general aviation airports is crucial in supporting the public value they deliver to communities throughout central Indiana.”
